Finding Authenticity—on a Harley

What happens when women in midlife step out of what’s predictable? For Bernadette Murphy, best-selling author and long-time book critic for the Los Angeles finding authenticityTimes, learning to ride a motorcycle at the age of forty-eight becomes the catalyst that transforms her from a settled wife and professor with teenage children into a woman on her own. Learning to ride a motorcycle is really just a way of opening a door for Murphy. It enabled her to go through a tough divorce and start her life over again. Along the way, she goes rock climbing, ice climbing, SCUBA diving and open ocean paddling (along with cross-country motorcycling of course) while looking at neuroscience and the biology of risk. It was her way of searching for and finding authenticity. This could prove to be a great adventure on the radio. Tune in.

These include The Tao Gal’s Guide to Real Estate (with Michelle Huneven); The Knitters Gift; and the bestselling Zen and the Art of Knitting. Her personal narrative and essays on literature have appeared in The Rumpus, The Nervous Breakdown, Manifest Station, BOOK Magazine, Ms. Magazine, LA Weekly and more. Murphy recently published her latest book, Harley and Me: Embracing Risk on the Road to a More Authentic Life. By all means, read her book. Come to the show thinking of ways you could go about finding authenticity for yourself. You don’t have to have a Harley to do it. But, then, who knows?
